Very nice work Kelly. Glad I finally found your site. Hope you don't mind if I share! Always good to see a young Sampson County person doing well. I look forward to reviewing more of your videos here.

Kelly,

Thank you so much for sharing this story with your readers. Today was a sad state of affairs. Tim passed away in front of his family and friends. Sad because of his death, comforting because of his immense pain he was in. Tim will always be with us because of his bravery to show the world what this disease does. But he continued to live his life the way he wanted to. And lived it he did.

It has been a long day filled with emotions both positive and sad. The one thing that we have to get out is awareness and let the world know how awful this disease is and get some serious research $$$ do find a cure...not something to slow it down...a cure.

Thank you,

Kelly, thank you for sharing "Often Awesome" with us! I have added it to Sam's website, and will post about it this week. Though He has a brain injury from a car accident, so much of these videos is familiar territory. Too familiar, actually. Very interesting to see how it looks from the outside. Save for the ventilator, this is much of our life in video form. We have kept a blog of Sam's injury, and we hoped recovery, since the day of the accident in 2006. He has several hundred followers (still!)

ALS, in my opinion, is the cruelest of cruel diseases and conditions. To be perfectly yourself one day, and someone so different externally in a rapid course is nothing short of heartbreaking and shocking. The end stage is much like what we experience.."locked in" and only able to communicate through one's eyes. I have lost several online friends to AlS, and it is my hope that a cure or effective treatment will be found one day.

Again, thank you. And please feel free to visit Sam at www.caringbridge.org/visit/samandersen

This article was more accessible to me. I got it the first time around. Plus you seem more approachable in this article. I also understand the basic concept of Americans want stories that affect them NOT just ONE group. Although I've never considered myself or my daughter to be a part of any group we go against the grain against the odds so really never had the benefits or pitfalls of being on the IN group. I let a local Legislator know my daughter was an Integrationist and he was humble enough to tell me I taught him a NEW word then he taught me one, Compassion Exhaustion which I find an interesting concept. Back to the concept of affecting ALL Americans well if ALL Americans go to schools, doctor appointments and enjoy leisure time than our story does affect ALL Americans because people need to know will the teachers and doctors do right by you or is there a system that is keeping all of us from doing what is RIGHT by AMWERICA and keeping us all from attaining Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

I'm glad you wrote this article I feel the mystery has somewhat dissipated and that I have the accurate angle to pitch our story how it affects ALL AMERICANS. In fact the word ALL is my Legislative Mock Testimony summed up.

Thanks Kelly for your insight!

It never hurts to ask. Also, why not engage your local paper (if it's small enough) and see if they'd review your press release and offer suggestions for what they like to see in a press release?

After all, I come from the broadcast side of media and not the print world. They're different.

Thanks for your kind words about my presentation. I was told to come speak to the group about spinning the media and pitching stories but, otherwise, was left to develop the flow of the presentation. That took a lot of trust on behalf of the PIP organizers since I threw a bit of water on some notions, I feel. Those written and faxed press releases; keep them personal in their appeal. There's so much passion that if you truly believe in what you're "pitching," it will come through, even on paper.

Heidi,

There is nothing wrong with making the determination that you don't want to publicly tell your personal experiences. In fact, your gift may be in offering perspective when issues arise where you or your family may be affected. A perspective on everyday living or goal achievement is much different than describing personal affairs to an audiences of tens of thousands. I'm certain you have tons of perspective and offering begins with the phrase, "Have you considered the perspective that....." and continue your thought.

If people don't walk in certain shoes, it's difficult to see all sides. This doesn't apply in straight-forward news stories in many cases, but there are many stories being filed where perspective is needed more than personal info. I'm really glad you dropped by the website this weekend. It was great to meet you and I really sensed your commitment and goal of harnessing it towards effective work in the public arena.

HI Kelly,

I need to read your message a few more times as there is a lot of information to glean from it as was your presentation to us. I thought what you had presented to us was very well thought out and presented. The connection you have with two of the PIP partners was evident and you take your role very seriously and those whom you serve. I have first name Kelly's and last name Kelly's in my family from up North and I swear you look like kin to my folks. Even though you are not kin I feel proud about your presentation and honestly it was the best presentation for me in a long time. The reason is the candor, the seriousness you have for your job, the mysteriousness also from the answers to my questions. I especially liked the lack of political intentions that you had which was a great sigh of relief for me after one of the hardest PIP weeks for me yet. I think it's neat that you are a reporter and your wife is an OT and it seems you would be a good match for my story but due to the learning curve and mysteriousness I still feel regarding media in general I am not at the place I am ready yet to ask for someone to do a story. Perhaps it's not asking but the story comes when the doing has been done. At that point we may not want the story or publicity but it's probably too bad and seen as a disservice to NOT have your story shared the same way I feel sometimes when it won't get shared when you think it should. I can't have a closed mind to media after speaking with you but just not sure how I feel about it still. I do think you are a good person and thank you for supporting the People in the PIP program FIRST and ALWAYS. Thanks!!!!

Kelly, I was amazed at your candor seeing you knew nothing about us indiviually. You came across confident and I could see the seriousness in your ability to communicate the facts. We were very fortunate not to hear from a 'run of the mills' reporter who only believes in self promotion or self service.

Your friendship with a certain member of the Partners group was aunthentic and fresh. It was if you two had never lost touch with one another.

Overall, You were the perfect speaker to speak for PIP 2011 group. I admire your ability to speak to a very diverse group of people. You have taught us to engage ourselves within the media as confident and with great candor!

Thank you

I found the information you shared to be helpful and educational all in one. I took what you had talked about and practiced writing a press release. I hope that some of the contacts I know at my city newspaper will launch it because I think that others can benefit from it. Thank you again for taking your time to come be a speaker at Partners.
